Ways to Find Relief from Allergies
People with allergies typically look for any kind of relief from them as allergies can be uncomfortable and even dangerous for your health. There are many triggers for allergies including food and pollen, and they can cause difficulties with breathing, or cause itchy red skin and eyes. If you want to find relief from your allergies here are some ways you can do so:
1. Take medication
There are many over the counter medications you can take to help with allergy relief. Mainly these are known as antihistamines. When your body detects an allergen as a threat it releases histamine to take care of the threat causing allergy symptoms, so antihistamines work by blocking the release of histamine and easing your symptoms. Antihistamines can help stop congestion, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, fatigue, itchy skin, hive, red eyes, running or blocked nose, sneezing, insomnia, nausea, and vomiting caused by allergies.
2. Use a nasal spray
When allergens such as pollen or pet dander enter the body it is typically through the mucus membranes of the nose. By using a nasal spray you can wash out the allergen from your nose and stop your body from reacting negatively to it. You can purchase different types of sprays such as antihistamine sprays or decongestant sprays which work by shrinking swollen blood tissue in the nose. There are also steroid nasal sprays that reduce congestion, sneezing, and itchy, watery eyes but they can take up to a week before you can see any improvements
3. Get an air purifier
Allergens such as dust mites, mold spores, pollen, and pet dander travel through the air and can cause allergies. If you are experiencing allergies because of these airborne irritants then you can get relief from an air purifier. By getting a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter you can remove allergens from the air of your home and stop allergens before they get to you
4. Use cortisone cream
If your allergies are causing red, itchy skin and hives you may find relief from a skin cream such as cortisone cream. Cortisone cream contains hydrocortisone which is known to reduce swelling, itching, and redness caused by a variety of things including allergies. When using cortisone cream it’s important to note that you shouldn’t use it on your face or underarms unless directed to by a physician
5. Undergo immunotherapy
Undergoing immunotherapy can reduce your sensitivity to allergies you already have. Typically this treatment is only recommended if medications are not improving allergy symptoms, a person is unable to avoid allergens, or if allergy medicines will interact with a person’s other medications. There are three options for immunotherapy: allergy shots, sublingual immunotherapy, and oral immunotherapy.
